In 1970 Daphne was now a single mother bringing up two school children. It was no longer possible to work in the beigel shop and she moved back to dressmaking. Knowing that both Sid and herself were forced to give up education and go out to work by their parents, she did her best to keep her children at school. Both went on to further education and became successful in their respective careers. Knowing how we had recently suffered as a family, in August 1970, we had our first overseas holiday together with her mother at Riccione, Italy. This started the travel bug, taking 2 more holidays in Italy and then to Israel. As Keith reached the age of 13, she wanted to make sure he would have a similar barmitzvah to Raymond, knowing that this is what Sid would have wanted. Despite the financial burden, and with the assistance of her brother Joseph, she achieved this. Keith’s barmitzvah took place at Stepney United Synagogue on 26 May 1973. The occasion was celebrated the following day at The Bouverie Ballrooms, London One month before the barmitzvah, tragedy struck again when her mother died suddenly two weeks before her 70th birthday. After her losses, she reached out to others in a similar situation and in 1975 set up the Beaus and Belles club for middle agers. She managed this successfully for many years giving of her time tirelessly.
