Eighties: A New Career, A Booba

1980 - 1989

With Raymond marrying Rosalind in March 1980, and Keith away at University, Daphne was now living on her own. She continued to live alone for the remainder of her life. Her younger son, Keith married Sue in October 1983. While in the seventies Daphne had previous travelled to Europe and Israel, with Raymond living in Nairobi, Kenya, she took her first intercontinental vacation. In 1983, with her friend Anita, spent 3 weeks over Christmas period travelling around Kenya. On arrival she seemed relieved that the place was quite civilised and was not staying in a mud hut. I can remember her sleeping with Anita in a tent in the Masai Mara hearing the sound of lions in the background. To comfort them I gave them a saucepan and spoon telling them that if they hear a lion close by just bang as loud as you can. Hopefully it should scare the lions away! This was the beginning of many holidays to faraway places including Australia, USA, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Egypt. Many taken with her dear friend Anita. In the mid eighties when made redundant at dressmaking she started an entirely new career at an office in Docklands as a Market Researcher. On April 15, 1984, she picked up the phone, it was long distance from Nairobi and was greeted with the words “Hello Booba”. Daphne was now a grandmother with the birth of Alexander Isaac. Daphne or Booba as she is now known was blessed 3 more grandchildren, Edward (1986), Holly (1988) and Tom (1990).
